- On September 11, 1944 the 28th Infantry Division claimed the distinction of being the first American unit to enter Germany during World War II. Attacks in the Hurtgen Forest began November 2, 1944 as the 28th Infantry stormed into Vossenack, Kommerscheidt and Schmidt amid savage fighting and heavy losses. On November 8, 1944, the American troops break off action. Under cover of darkness the remnants are extracted. From its effective strength of about 25,000 the 28th Infantry Division had lost more than 6,000 men.
