Notes
Enlisted; Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Boxing; Heavy Weight Champion of US Army Forces in Europe. Born; Whigham, Georgia. Home of record; Whigham, Georgia. Father of Lance Corporal Jimmie T. Harrison, Jr. US Marine Corps. Burial; Woodlawn Cemetery, Whigham, Georgia. Jimmy T. was officially reported killed in action by the Army Department and it was some four months before the erroneous report was corrected. A memorial service was held in Whigham, Georgia and an insurance policy was paid off. The official death not questioned. Then some four months afterwards, the Army Department reported he had been wounded in action, but not killed. Jimmy T. was indeed wounded when a piece of shrapnel pierced his spine. He said he lay, unconscious for a whole day in a US field hospital. He regained consciousness the next day to find he had been moved to a regular hospital near Paris where he was finally attended by a fine French doctor. He said the Frenchman removed the piece of shrapnel and he almost immediately got relief and began to recover.
