A report of the experience reveals that your ship and the area about her were subjected to repeated bombing attacks throughout the six day period. In spite of danger from falling bombs, shrapnel and machine gun fire, the NAVY GUN CREW remained at battle stations day and night, savagely striking back at the enemy with a sustained and accurate barrage of shellfire which contributed to the destruction of four German planes. The courageous and effective defense of your ship enabled her to carry out her mission in the invasion operation. The quality of your performance on the occasion was in keeping with the best traditions of the United States Naval Service.
