- Purple Heart (Serious hip wound from a shell fragment acquired during Invasion of Gilbert Islands). At 0550 on November 20, 1943, Japanese shore batteries opened fire on the transports, five shells had fallen near USS William P. Biddle, shrapnel wounding one man. At 0558, the transport then moved out of range.
