Notes
Born; Randolph County, Georgia. Graduate of Cairo High School Class of 1939. US Army service number 34-829-810. Four from Grady County were assigned to the 7th Armored Battalion. PFC Sam Fiskus, Staff Sergeant Thomas Peel and Staff Sergeant Leland Harrison were in the 38th Armored Infantry Regiment. Corporal Francis Lemuel Jones was in the 48th Armored Infantry Regiment. They landed together on Omaha Beach, August 13, 1944. Sam and Leland would be wounded twice. Francis would be killed. The Battalion crossed the Elbe River and meet the Russians as the war ended. Employed by Western Union before entering the service. After the war he got a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Georgia. He worked with the Mitchell County EMC until he retired. Burial; Pinecrest Memory Gardens, Pelham, Mitchell County, Georgia.
