Enlisted; Bainbridge Army Air Base, Georgia. US Army serial number 20-431-003. Four Grady County soldiers were returning to Grady County for the weekend on State Route 38 near Homerville, Georgia. The car blew a tire and wrecked. Pvt Earnest Barrett of Cairo was killed, Pvt Robert McGill of Calvary was seriously injured and died the next day. Pvt James Barrett also of Cairo and a cousin of Earnest was not injured. Pvt Joe B. Willis also of Cairo was seriously injured but recovered. Earnest is buried at Capel Cemetery, Grady County, Georgia.
