- MIA; Japanese Submarine I-175 torpedoed the USS Liscome Bay CVE 56 off Butaritan Island Nov 24th 1943. Hugh was one of the 860 crew members who did not survive the sinking of the escort carrier.

- Medal given for heroism against the enemy April 2 1943 at San Diego, California. CITATION: For bravery and devotion to duty under adverse conditions during attacks by the enemy in the British Solomon Islands during the period Sept 30 to early November 1943 LAWRENCE at the risk of his own life exhibited outstanding perservence and courage. With a complete disregard for repeated damaging artillery fire and aerial bombing raids by the enemy LAWRENCE persisted under these dangerous conditions in his work of maintaining the planes of his squadron, thereby contributing immeasurably to the numerous successful attack missions made by his squadron against the enemy./s/ Admiral Halsey.
